Paranormal romance is leaning hard into the undead this year, with a wave of new stories built around ghosts, vampires, spirits, and other beings for whom a traditional happily ever after requires some creative storytelling. The genre’s promise of emotional closure stays intact, but the route to that ending is more complicated when one of the leads is dead.

A seasonal surge for supernatural love stories The current interest in paranormal romance appears to be rising alongside romantasy’s broader popularity. That overlap makes the subgenre especially well suited to autumn reading, when colder weather and Halloween in the near distance give ghost stories, cursed lovers, and underworld journeys a timely appeal. Several new titles are already out for readers who want their romance with a supernatural edge, and more are on the way before the season is over.

One of the newly spotlighted releases is Die for Me by Shirlene Obuobi, which centers on Sean, a brilliant cardiologist who has stopped expecting to find a partner who meets her standards. She meets Julian, a handsome man who is 11 years younger than her, and although she initially hesitates over the age gap, she comes to see him as unusually mature and wise. As Sean begins experiencing memory lapses and odd impulses, the story shifts into darker territory and reveals that Julian is not quite what he seems.

Find My Way Down to You by Julian Winters takes a different route into the supernatural. The novel follows 18-year-old August, who is still grieving his boyfriend’s death when he accidentally enters the Underworld and gets a chance to search for his lost love. The Underworld is described as vivid and magical in contrast to the muted life August has been living, but the journey also brings him into contact with Cary, a ferrier of souls whose presence introduces a new romantic possibility.

Folklore, necromancy, and dangerous bargains Deathly Fates by Tesia Tsai blends romantasy with Chinese folklore. Its central figure, Siying, is a holy priestess of necromancy who reanimates corpses to help them move on from the world of the living. Her assignment to handle the body of a recently deceased prince becomes far more complicated when she discovers that his soul is still attached to it. Siying can earn a greater reward if she helps return him to life by restoring his qi, but the pair’s journey home uncovers facts about his death that threaten both of them and the kingdom itself.

The upcoming releases extend the undead romance trend into even more specific supernatural territory. You’re the One That I Haunt by Katie Jung, due Sept. 22 from Pamela Dorman Books, follows Libby as she tries to stop the wedding of Carter Coldwell, the best friend she secretly loves. The obstacle in her path is Carter’s cousin Trip, a ghost determined to break a family curse and visible only to Libby. When she reluctantly joins him, the arrangement becomes more complicated as she starts falling for the one man even less available than her engaged best friend.

Alma Vampires by Elena Armas, arriving Nov. 17 from Berkley, puts a fashion empire, a family legacy, and an ancient blood debt into the same story. Valle inherits her mother’s fortune and the Alma brand after her mother dies unexpectedly, and suddenly has to manage college, an international company, and troubling nightmares and cravings. Hadrian steps in to help run the business and protect her, but he is carrying a century-old obligation that binds them together. His secrecy does little to weaken the attraction between them, even as Valle has reasons not to trust him.

Taken together, these books suggest that paranormal romance is broadening its appeal by pairing emotional payoff with supernatural stakes. Whether the lovers are separated by death, curses, blood debts, or the Underworld itself, the appeal remains the same: readers get the intensity of romance and the imaginative freedom of fantasy, all wrapped in stories designed for spooky-season reading and beyond.
