Nearly two months after opening in Toronto’s Mirvish Village, Book Bar has already become one of the city’s most talked-about literary destinations. The sleek bookstore-meets-events-space arrived with a sizable following on TikTok and Instagram, but the biggest surprise so far has been what customers are buying once they walk through the door: not the romance and fantasy titles staff expected to fly off the shelves, but literary fiction.
That trend has delighted the team, according to assistant operations manager Daniel Roberts, who pointed to the store’s location near the University of Toronto as one reason for the appetite. Roberts, who previously worked at Book City, has been helping anchor the shop in Toronto’s broader literary culture, even using the store’s Instagram account to recommend books such as William Maxwell’s 1979 novel So Long, See You Tomorrow to readers who love John Williams’s Stoner.
