An image of Earth at night, viewed from space during an internet search, became the starting point for a broader meditation on how human beings have remade darkness. The map, labeled simply “Global Map,” showed the planet not as a uniformly dark sphere punctuated by isolated lights, but as a dense, luminous patchwork in which cities, suburbs, roads, and river corridors stood out with startling clarity.
