Judith Godrèche’s Annie Ernaux Adaptation ‘A Girl’s Story’ Sells to Zeitgeist Films With Kino Lorber Handling Distribution

Judith Godrèche’s Cannes title “A Girl’s Story,” adapted from Annie Ernaux’s memoir, has been picked up by Zeitgeist Films in association with Kino Lorber. The companies are planning to open the film at New York’s Film Forum in April 2027 before expanding it nationally.

The sale places the Un Certain Regard selection among the films finding distribution out of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where acquisition activity has remained brisk across the lineup. Kino Lorber will also help with distribution on the project, extending the film’s path from the festival circuit to an American theatrical launch.

“A Girl’s Story” draws on Ernaux’s acclaimed writing and follows the author in 2020 on a book tour before moving back to her teenage years in the summer of 1958. Its story is described as a reflection on the cruelty of other girls and the bitterness of sexual initiation, continuing the screen adaptations that have brought Ernaux’s work to the screen in recent years.

The film has already drawn a favorable response for its fidelity to the memoir. It has been described as a strong entry among recent Ernaux adaptations, alongside films such as “Happening” and “Simple Passion.” That positioning may help it appeal to art-house audiences that have responded to Ernaux’s literary reputation and to cinema built around her experiences.
